Question

What is the ruling on taking ilm (Islamic knowledge) from the people of Bid’a (innovation within religion)? And I have asked some of them why they take (ilm from them)? They said that they study with them because the truth can be taken even from the Shaytan (devil).

Sheikh Saleh Al-Luhaydan
First of all, the Shaytan doesn’t give truths. And perhaps an objector might say, "He told you the truth, though he is a liar" [Bukhari: 3275]. However, it is not permissible to take ilm (Islamic knowledge) from those who are corrupt, except if the one that takes knowledge from them has fortified himself with correct ilm. So, he benefits from them the ilm by which they are distinguished over others, such as knowledge of the Arabic language in grammar, morphology and rhetoric etc. As for taking knowledge of the Sharia from the Fussaq (those who deviated), this is not permissible because they only mention to him that which doesn’t oppose their Fisq (deviance). We seek refuge with Allah.
