Every good deed that you do in the ten days is more beloved to Allah even than jihad in His cause, except for the one who did jihad with himself and money, was killed, and his wealth was spent (in the cause of Allah). And among the greatest things that enter into this, O brothers, are obligatory deeds. Many people are concerned with voluntary deeds in the ten days and do not care about obligatory deeds.
You find him keen on fasting, and this is good, but he is not keen on congregational prayer. He sleeps and misses congregational prayer. He neglects that which is mandatory upon him, and perhaps he is careless about Salah (prayer).
You say to him: Subhan Allah (Glory is to Allah), my brother, we didn't see you today for Asr (afternoon) prayer?! He says, by Allah, I am fasting, so I slept.
The greatest righteous deeds are the obligatory ones. So, one of the best things is to pay more attention to your prayers during these ten days.
If it is your usual habit that you come to the Masjid during the Iqamah and catch the Takbeer of Ihram, in these days, go early, and be keen on having humility, presence of the heart in your prayer, and so on.
(That’s) because your deed is a righteous deed that Allah loves in these ten days more than other days.
Similarly, honoring your parents and keeping ties of kinship…
This includes the dhikr (remembrance of Allah), fasting as we have established, and Ihsan (the highest form of goodness) to people with different kinds of Ihsan.
Ihsan by the tongue, by smiling, by charity. Every kind of Ihsan is included in this, and Allah the Exalted loves it.
And this is included in what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "There are no days during which the righteous action is so pleasing to Allah than these days (i.e., the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah)." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah, except in case one goes forth with his life and his property and does not return with either of it."
Perhaps this is sufficient, and Allah knows best.
