Sheikh AbdulMuhsin Al-Abbad
Question: Regarding the Hadith of Abu Hurairah when he was guarding the Zakat al-Fitr (and Shaitan told him to read Ayat al-Kursi) so the Prophet ﷺ said: "He told you the truth although he is a constant liar", is this Hadith an evidence that you can take knowledge from other than the people of the truth?
Sheikh: From what?
“He told you the truth although he is a constant liar.”
Sheikh: Yes?
Is it an evidence that it is allowed to take knowledge from other than the people of the truth, and the people of Sunnah?
Answer: No, the Hadith doesn't mean that.
This is not evidence in that a person can look for the truth from people who don't follow the truth.
I mean, he should not busy himself [with them] and divert.
But what happened is that the truth that was said by a liar (Shaitan), who is used to lying, but told the truth in this matter.
As they say: 'a lair may tell the truth.'
A lair doesn't bring anything but lies, but occasionally he might tell the truth.
However, that isn't an evidence that a person should pursue the people of falsehood and people of innovation to learn from them or benefit from them, claiming to be seeking the truth that might come from them.
Rather, he must go to people who have nothing but the truth, not go looking for a person who may tell the truth but is a lair and an innovator.
